Mayor’s Update Live! – June 29 2020

This week, some disappointing news came through. The Marriot call center is closing it’s doors. The Marriot was one of the biggest employers in St. Thomas. Mayor Joe shares his respect for the quality of the service The Marriot and their employees have provided.

The Economic Development Corporation started today with talks to see if there is anything else they can do. Mayor Joe encourages folks to reach out for support during this time.

Over the weekend, the Alma College construction site poured a large amount of concrete for the new apartment buildings going up. There have been some complaints that the workers have started earlier than their permit allowed. For these concerns, Mayor Joe has directed us to Customer Service at City Hall. You can phone in at 519-631-1680, ext. “0”, by e-mail at customerservice@stthomas.ca or in person on level two of City Hall, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Canada Day Celebrations organized by the City will not be happening this year as they normally do, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Enjoy your small group celebrations!

Splash pads will be opening on Canada Day and will stay open until Labour Day. There will be, of course, new rules for the splash pad. Please review these new rules with your children prior to enjoying the splash pads. The splash pads will be powerwashed daily. The playgrounds are still closed in the City.

Sometimes road construction (like on Elm Street) requires that the manholes get raised and lowered in order to accommodate paving, which may happen at different stages, sometimes it isn’t completed until the following year.

Patios are open in the downtown! Enjoy your next restaurant experience with the beauty of summer weather upon you!
