Live with Mayor Joe Preston for Mayor’s Update Episode 58

On June 24 and 25, council will host a “Zoom” webinar in place of a public meeting for City planning. The Shaw Valley report will be one of the things discussed at these meetings.

St. Thomas City Hall has still been open for marriage and burial certificates, during this time of Covid-19.

Notice has been received from the Ontario Energy Board regarding an application by Enbridge Gas Inc. for approval of a system expansion surcharge, a temporary connection surcharge and an hourly allocation factor. This was approved at council.

Mayor Joe anticipates The Horton Farmers Market will provide a new plan for the Market to open, although it did not appear tonight at Council.

Tonight was the first time, since the Covid-19 restrictions, that Council met in-person. They implemented physical distancing and protocols for their in-person meeting. Mayor Joe compliments his Council for their capacity to continue to meet throughout this time.

Construction projects are moving along. 1Password Park is not yet open, but construction has been moving along well.

Mayor Joe reminds us that the grass may be longer than usual in some parts of the City, because the City has been prioritizing tasks, and has not hired on the summer students that they usually do. Mayor Joe said it will be done as soon as it can.

The City’s Canada Day Celebrations are cancelled for July 1, 2020. If there is something the City can do -for instance, if something does change with regulations, the City will move ahead with some kind of celebration.

Flag raisings have still been happening at City Hall, with no more than 5 people in attendance. Some have been filmed so that the event can be seen by anyone who wishes to watch.

Covid-19 testing is available to anyone who wishes to have a test. Citizens can call St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital to book an appointment.

At this time, there is a limit on permits for Hot Dog carts in the City. Mayor Joe does not believe this will change at this time, in order to support the current restaurant businesses who have been hit hard by Covid-19 regulations.
