Our community came out on Friday morning to participate in opening of the new Dalewood bridge. The former bridge, previously built as a temporary one lane bridge decades ago, was closed in November of 2017 after being deemed structurally unsafe. McLean Taylor Construction built the new bridge and BTE Engineering provided engineering services. The closing of the former bridge was a point of consternation for many that used it and the new one opening is being heralded as a great success.
The Dalewood bridge was opened this afternoon with speeches given by Karen Vecchio, Member of Parliament, Jeff Yurek, and Joe Preston – Mayor ST.Thomas Ontario followed by a ceremnonal walk across the bridge with members of the public. Vehicle access will be allowed later this afternoon.Railway City Tourism #stthomasproud #explorerailwaycity

“I think this is a vital link connecting the central part of St. Thomas into the northern part of St. Thomas and gets you into London. I’m glad the city has come forward and finished this project. I’m going to use it quite often.” -Jeff Yurek, MPP
“It is absolutely fantastic. It reconnects the community, the people at Dalewood camping, and all the people that live on 52 Highway. It’s a great way of reconnecting the community. It’s really exciting. It’s great for this part of the community and great for all of St. Thomas.” -Karen Vecchio, MP
“Our community continues to bring itself great new assets that have always been needed. The temporary bridge was here for decades and it served it’s purpose, but this is another entrance into our community and as we grow and get busier we need this. What a beautiful job we’ve done, no longer needing to play chicken on the bridge (which way, who get’s to go first on the bridge…), two lanes wide and a bike path. We can’t do more pretty than this. Kettle Creek and this area of St. Thomas is so beautiful to come look at – this gives people a chance to come see our new bridge and hang out here while you’re here, so we’re happy to get this finished and have another great asset for the city of St. Thomas.” -Joe Preston, Mayor of St. Thomas
“We built a bridge that is iconic. The style is called a cable-stayed design. So it’s got pylons and metal stays that hold up the deck. It’s a two span bridge, it’s got two lanes and a really wide pedestrian path on the east side of the bridge and so that pathway and the sidewalk on the hill connects the community to this great natural area.”
